Machiavelli Restaurante is a traditional Italian restaurant, located on 123 Clarence St in Wynyard, Sydney.

When Machiavelli approached me to re-do their catering and menu design, I didn’t want to just give them a print design that would need changing each season. Instead, I wanted to give them something uniquely ‘Machiavelli’ that could be built upon in the years to come. By including illustrations, secondary elements and solidifying their brand colours in these designs I was able to bring their current brand’s character and specialisation in Italian cuisine to the forefront.

  • Researching into their history, Italian cuisine’s history, and flicking through their imagery I was able to identify that each dish was handmade.

Using that as key inspiration, the secondary imagery practically made itself. This birthed their abstract, flawed, and organic illustrations. Combining the hand-made element of their dishes, with the idea that each one is drawn with a piece of spaghetti.

In contrast to this very contemporary style of illustration, I also wanted to include a heavily traditional element usually alongside Italian restaurants - the thick red stripes.
